Thursday's Chat, Selections & Results- 10 November

Another decent enough day yesterday with +8.13 profits.  This getting up early to do my study & selecting is working nicely - the advantages are that I am freshly awake (brain untouched by the ravages of the day), have a quiet house (noisy family all still zzzzing) and have mucho coffee....as long as those adverts keep being clicked!!

My selections will be added over the next hour - most likely all Taunton as I have a 44% strike rate there......it's good to firm but light showers forecast so could be good in places by this pm

What a day for the Tizzards to hit form after a lengthy cold spell....and a severe bout of seconditis for me!  Just the two winners mean a loss of -6.2 today.
(I shall blame the ground getting a little more juice in that I predicted....!!)

Look At That Gorgeous Face

My favourite horse in the world, Peddler's Cross won his beginners chase at Bangor on Wednesday - although at 1/8, I wasn't on!  He looked as though he enjoyed every fence with his ears pricked and seems a complete natural over the big sticks - he 'flowed' over the jumps!  But I should use proper 'racing term's so -  he was economical, low, fast and absolute first class Festival material (flowed sums him up much better!).  His breeding (sire is Oscar) would suggest that he ought to possess the stamina that is required for the really top races but I tend to go along with Sir Henry's belief that the stamina comes from the dam's side.  I really hope he can see out 3 miles over jumps.

I've loved Peddler's since first seeing him at Haydock on his UK debut a couple of years ago.  He won his NH Flat race and was on the same card as Diamond Harry who will be making his seasonal at Haycock (again) on the 19th of this month after almost a year off.  Those two stood out head and shoulders above every other horse that particular day - and yes, I backed them both.  Jason Maguire must have felt a pang watching TImmy Murphy aboard.  Jason should be back on the race course in a couple of weeks and the natural order restored.

No funnies today but a mouth waterer for the weekend!

The Guardian sports section have excellent articles on horseracing and I have noticed that stories involving the new whip rules have Ferdy Murphy's name popping up on occasion and one thing's for sure - he's opinionated.....and certainly has no sympathy for any jockey (pity Graham Lee!).

11 Oct - re. the new whip rules
"I think they're absolutely fantastic and, if the jockeys are complaining about it, they want to go back to school and learn to count. My opinion is, in 100 races, you might have one horse that wouldn't win because of the whip rules. [Resistance from jockeys] is the absolute biggest load of bollocks. They're sitting in there like glorified gods, they need to get on and get on with it. The BHA have been absolutely fantastic. They've been incredibly fair."
fast forward to 08 Nov
One jockey with more cause than most for depression is the conditional John Winston, who was found to have made insufficient effort when riding On The Right Path to a distant fourth place in a novice hurdle at Sedgefield. Winston, riding in public for only the 12th time, was suspended for 10 days after the horse's trainer, Ferdy Murphy, said he was not satisfied with the ride and that he had expected the rider to make more effort.
Both from pieces written by Chris Cook

John Winston is the 22yo brother of Robert and is picking up his fledgling career after having a horrific road crash almost three years ago which pushed his riding career back somewhat.
