Monday's Mid-May Moochings - 14 May

I finally have internet that hasn't dropped in over half an hour- hurray!  Having spent Saturday morning and part of Sunday relying on my mobile USB for internet connection (not easy in a house with an almost non-xistent mobile signal) it's heaven to be able to click on a race card and instantly see the form instead of waiting for the page to load line by slow line.

So there is a blog here where there has been none since Friday but I decided that this shall no longer be a daily blog -  especially since I now have daily picks on www.speedyequines.com.  Rather I'll post when I have something worth saying rather than because it's another day......there's nothing worse than something you enjoy becoming a chore.

Mirco Demuro has been adding to his win tally at a rate of 1 every three or four rides including a very tasty 25/1 win aboard Ozz at Chester on Friday. Still some value there....he's at Wolves today on Emma Jean (13:45) 1st at 9/2, Green Wave (15:15) UP and Travelling (16:45) UP

Sad sad news to learn that Furner's Green who broke down just past the winning line (he was 3rd)  had to be euthanised.  Joseph O'Brien was pretty disconsolate afterwards (as you would imagine!) and had to be consoled by his Dad.
Furners Green RIP
The reason that when a racehorse (or any horse) is almost certainly euthanised when it breaks a leg is not due to the cost of the veterinary bills or that it's lost it's value as a moneymaking piece of horseflesh!  This is an all too common misconception.
The truth is that horses have very few nerves in their legs which makes it incredibly difficult (if not impossible) for breaks and other leg injuries to heal since they have very little circulation to that area of their body.  The lower leg is significantly harder to heal than the upper.  It compares closely to a human with diabetes - where the circulation is poor and when a cut toe can become life threatening.
If the BHA could find a way to publicise these facts and educate the wider public then I'm sure it would greatly  help to banish the common myth  that those involved with racing are totally mercenary when it comes to dealing with such injuries.

I am very interested to watch how No Dominion runs in the first at Redcar (14:00) today.  This is his first handicap and the booking of Paul Mulrennan (on board lto) is a plus in my eyes.  He is a son of Dylan Thomas (like Furner's Green) and you won't often see breeding like that running in a class 5 handicap at Redcar!  He'd have finished in a better position last time out had he not run out of room on the inside rail and had to be switched to get a run and with that seasonal debut on soft behind him, I'll be disappointed if he isn't placed at least.

Hayley Turner is travelling to Wolberhampton for just one ride today - Sylvia Pankhurst 16:15

Notes:
1/            Tom Scu is coming for the one ride

I am beginning to feel desperately sorry for Kieren Fallon who was without a ride in either Guineas a couple of weekends ago and has been riding some 2nd and 3rd string runners for trainers - mostly starting at odds in double figures.  I know he has (yet another!) new agent but his last winner was over a week ago and unless he has some decent bookings soon, then it won't be a surprise to hear he's riding in pony races in Wales!  I honestly don't think the ability is gone but the opportunities seem to have dried up for some reason.......!!

Horsey name of the day has to be Choccywoccydoodah (Wolves 16:45)!
