This is a simple and effective method of determining the true going at a racecourse if you’ve forgotten to take a stick! If you are a man then it’s advisable to take your wife, girlfriend, sister or mother....unless you are Eddie Izzard ......or Audrey’s friend Marc from Coronation Street.
If these sink in the going is good to soft.
The going can be determined depending on the shoes you are wearing and the depths you sink to..... 6”+ stilettos are a great guide especially if they have calibrated markings up the heel. Unfortunately, 6” stilettos shoes are more of a ‘sitting’ shoe so they’ll rarely be seen walking on a racecourse!
If you don’t have a lady with you then you may need to be very discreet in your ‘going calculations’ or you could be mistaken for a foot fetishist!
Stilettos
If these don’t sink at all then the going is firm and you’re probably at Bath.

Court Shoes (heel ½ to 1 inch wide)
If these don’t sink in then the going is good to firm or better. If the heel tip sinks in then it’s the going is good.

Cuban Heels
Wedges
If these sink in then the going is soft
Flatties
If these sink in then the going is heavy and you really should be wearing wellies.
If you wear any of the above and your feet get wet then you are at Windsor and have wandered too far across the track (and ended up in the lake).
If you wear any of the above and your feet get dirty then it’s likely you are at Wolverhampton, Lingfield or Southwell.
