Saturday's Random Racing Thoughts - 30 June

I quite like the idea of the Irish Derby being run in the evening at 19:40 ...I think!

Marco Botti has just came off the cold list with his first winner (14/1) in 25 runners on Friday at Folkestone.  It may be worth keeping an eye on his runners tomorrow to see if the tide has turned - for sure, they'll be going off a fairly big prices at least until Monday!

I read in the Racing Post that Reg Hollinshead is 88 years old.  This is an incredible age to be getting up at stupid o'clock each morning and to train racehorses!  Now there is a man who truly must love his work..

Will Daniel Tudhope please let some of the other jockeys have a go at winning!

A the time of writing, Camelot still isn't guaranteed to be lining up for the Irish Derby (update:  he will now run)  Call me a cynic but given Aiden O'Brien's predisposition for releasing negative sound bites about his fancied horses, it would appear that Camelot will trounce the field again this evening....just so long as there is no more significant rainfall.  There has been some questions raised about the value of the Derby form after Astrology's poor show at in the King Edward at Ascot last week but Thomas Chippendale is a much better horse than anyone gave credit (he hadn't wintered well or been eating up before the Derby but was left in all the same) and I don't think we saw the 'real' Astrology that day.  Connections are not going to keep Camelot in this and risk devaluing his stud value if they aren't pretty damn sure of the win.  I will be backing pace-setter Astrology each way as well though.  He does handle soft and if Camelot doesn't show (and even if he does) then he may revert to his penultimate form and grab a place (or better) at a big price.

Camelot in full flow....

Why is it generally regarded as a really bad thing when a young horse is sent out in first time headgear?  Many people feel unable to back that horse with someone else's money but if the trainer feels it's time to 'resort' to it then the headgear can only be an improvement, after all it will have been tried at home. But then the benefit to those who aren't put off is that the price will always be decent ...if it wins that is!

It may be too much to hope that Botti and first time blinkers combine to make a 33/1 winner with Sekumkum in the 18:05 Doncaster this evening.........

  3. Would seem that Astrology has now been fully exposed as being no more than Camelot's pacemaker, albeit he got lucky and hung on for a place in the Epsom Derby. Last night's SP of 14/1 would seem to indicate that O'Brien was fully aware of Astrology's true status.
