Ginger McCain 1930-2011

As you will all know by now, Ginger McCain died today (Monday 19 Sept) after a short battle with cancer just 2 days before his 81st birthday.  I shan't attempt to be as eloquent as many with their thoughts and condolences on this sad day but I am so glad that Ginger was able to see his son train the winner of the Grand National this year and watch him follow his own footsteps.  I was lucky enough to be standing right next to the winners enclosure and you couldn't have seen a more excited and proud father that day.

He came out with two fantastically quotable and poignant remarks that day;

“Right from the word go, he’s made a cracking job of this training lark. In fact, if I ever meet his father I’m going to congratulate him and ask him where the brains came from!”

"That’s the best moment of my life,  Red Rum’s three victories were brilliant but it’s something special when you’ve bred the lad. I hoped he’d do it before I turned up my toes.”

I'm sure family and friends will (eventually) find comfort in the thoughts that he lived the life he wanted and loved and that he left behind a legacy and family that most can only aspire to.  He wasn't born into horse training, he sold used cars when he decided that what he really wanted to do was train horses.  He got his license, stabled the horses behind his car showroom in Southport and gave it a shot - initially topping up his income by driving taxis.  From taxi-driver to probably the most famous trainer in the country.

Ginger McCain RIP - a testament to following your dreams.
