I've been scratching my head trying to think what watching horse racing since Monday reminds me of and it's this:
Oh Dear ! |
I'm having a day off on Friday but will still be collating, noting and attempting to find that hidden common denominator that links winners under the new whip rules........
I'll be back and raring to go with renewed vigour for Saturday and Champions' Day.......if there are any jockeys to ride in it!
I won't add any more to the debate about the current state of racing other than to say that I am fully behind the jockeys here. If I worked for a company who then docked large chunks of my pay for trying too hard then I would also be rightfully pissed off. The BHA appear to be run by a panel of city businessmen to whom horseracing is a commodity and the jockeys a necessary overhead. I'd be surprised if any of them have ever sat on a horse in their lives. I want to believe that their policy and rule-making cock ups can be blamed on ignorance, naivety and a dreadful lack of empathy and understanding ....rather than anything more sinister such as politics, a ruse to keep jockeys in their cap-doffing places and a long term plan to get the whip banned entirely.
The BHA's attempt to get more public interested in horseracing is commendable but they are losing the hardcore long term racing enthusiast/punter at the expense of a few stag and hen partys.
No wonder the great British public have such a distorted view of horse racing if the one spokesman that the media turn to for a soundbite whenever there's a horseracing story is McCririck.
Can't someone be found who is able to talk about racing in an informed and rational way without waving their arms in the air and thinking of their next appearance fee? There's something positive that the BHA could do for racing - find and promote a media friendly (and likeable) spokesperson.
